A precision machine process in which the cylinder head has a thin layer of metal machined off the surface. Cylinder heads are designed to have a small extra layer of metal, often called ‘resurfacing allowance.’ It is an intentional few thousandths of an inch of extra metal on sealing surfaces since manufacturers are aware that engines can overheat, gaskets can fail, heads may warp over time, and repair may require machining. Oftentimes, the head allows for at least once, or often multiple times, to be resurfaced. The process helps make the head perfectly flat, smooth enough for the head gasket, and free of warping, damage, or corrosion.

A pressure testing machine in which the cylinder head is submerged in heated water, with all water conductors sealed off, while simultaneously applying air pressure to the cylinder head. From the air pressure and the submersion of the head under the heated water it helps revive air bubbles that escape through the cracks. From there, you can figure out cracks or leaks in the head and the specialized area where the issue is present. This test helps ensure that the cylinder head can withstand the coolant pressure without the possibility of leaking into the combustion chambers, oil passages, or outside the casting.

Using pressurized air to blast a concentrated amount of sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, against the cylinder head surface, we are able to remove carbon, oil stains, old gasket material, light corrosion, dirt, oxidation, and paint. This helps clean the cylinder head further after ultrasound cleaning, giving a brand new look.
